Mariposa County Health Alert

Infant Botulism Cases Linked to ByHeart Infant Formula have been identified in 13 cases across 10 states including 2 in California.

Infant botulism is the infectious (intestinal) form of botulism, this occurs when swallowed spores of Clostridium botulinum colonize the baby's large intestine and produce botulinum toxin there.

Seek immediate medical care if your infant has consumed ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula and has any of these symptoms:

  • Poor feeding

  • Loss of head control

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Decreased facial expression

Symptoms of infant botulism can take as long as several weeks to develop, so parents should remain vigilant if they used the recalled lots of infant formula.

Parents should report any weakness, difficulty swallowing, or other signs of infant botulism in their infants to healthcare providers immediately.

Do not use recalled infant formula.

Throw it away or return it to where you bought it.

If possible, record the lot number.

Wash items and surfaces that may have touched the recalled formula using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Public Health at 209-966-3689

The Mariposa Health & Wellness Coalition is an unincorporated community group. It does not have staff, funding, or raise money. It is run by its members, who donate their time and energy. The Mariposa County Tobacco Education Program provides some nonfinancial support because the Coalition promotes smoke-free communities and preventing youth access to nicotine and other tobacco products..
